Description

 This original hand colored lithograph, titled Sacred Ibis, is from the book "A History of British Birds", by: Rev. Francis Orpen Morris  (1851-1903, London) it was published in 1858.

History of British Birds, by F.O. Morris was printed in the village of Driffield,the home of renowned publisher Benjamin Fawcett. Fawcett, recruited Reverend F.O. Morris,who was a well known author on Natural History, specializing in birds, as the author.

Alexander Lydon, one of Fawcett’s principal engravers, was a major contributor in technique and design. Fawcett and his wife oversaw a group of women colourists holding them to the highest standards.

Work on A History of British Birds probably began in 1848, taking over seven years to complete, it was published in 1858. Initially sold in monthly parts it became a major success.

 

Size: The print is approx 6.5 x 10 inches and the matted size is 9 x 12 in.

 

Condition: These images are not retouched. Overall good condition for its age, showing signs of removal from book. Please see images for accurate representation of condition.
